take in the views
Here are a few hiking locations that I think will give you a variety of different types of hikes for everyone. One of the most impressive and must-do if you spend time out here in Malibu is being able to experience the Backbone Trail of the Santa Monica mountains. It stretches 67 miles and can be accessed by several different locations. All Trails is a great resource to view hikes and directions
Hikes
-
Very popular but quick day hike to an easily accessible waterfall. Best in winter months or after rainfall. It can get crowded quick on weekends
-
A challenging 1,200’ climb is rewarded with spectacular views of the pacific.
-
One of the most popular destinations in Malibu. Panoramic ocean and mountain views of some of the most pristine bluffs malibu offers. Great for whale watching and sea lion viewing. We recommend parking in the westward beach parking lot. There are only about 8 spaces and there is usually a line at the bluff trailhead. It’s a little hike up but it all meets up to the same place
-
The tallest peak in the Santa Monica mountains. The drive up towards circle x ranch is beautiful. I would also recommend continuing the drive all the way back and around to either Kanan road or down Encinal to see different lookouts in the mountains.
-
You can spend all week hiking in this park. The Sycamore Loop trail is a great place to start. It offers great views and is incredibly nice during sunset. It’s a bit longer so time yourself properly. Be aware of mountain bikes as it is a popular trail at all times of the day.
-
A huge build-up of soft sand has been blown up the side of the mountains and goes straight down to PCH and the ocean. You often see people working out here, sandboarding down, or just climbing up somewhere nice for sunset
-
This hike is a little out of town, but is a favorite of mine. Its one of my favorite parts of the backbone to hike up. Its a l lot of fun, and offers great views.
-
A great little network of trails that offer a good workout and some nice views. This hike can be easily accessible. You can make it as long or short as you want by continuing along additional connecting routes.
